At Conservacion Patagonica, we are grateful for the many friends who want to help and work with us, and aim to put as many willing hands to use as possible! Our volunteer program has grown and evolved over the years, and now represents a key component of our work.
For the 2012 – 2013 season, we have focused the intern program on a few key roles while transforming other positions into paid opportunities for local workers. We’re calling these positions “extended volunteer opportunities” to reflect the self-directed nature of the work. All work is unpaid.

General Information on Extended Volunteer Opportunities:
All volunteers joining us must be flexible and willing to pitch in when needed, regardless of their position. The work is not as glamorous or romantic as it appears in the 180 South movie; please have realistic expectations for working in a remote location, on a large, multi-faceted project. We ask you to take initiative in learning from your surroundings and in planning projects to contribute to the work here: the program is fairly unstructured. Fluency in Spanish is critical for integrating with the team at the park.
What Benefits We Provide to Long-Term Volunteers:
- An opportunity to contribute to the creation of a new national park and to the conservation of a biologically critical place.
- Numerous months living and exploring a beautiful part of Patagonia.
- Food throughout internship, either a campsite or shared bedroom depending on position, (slow) internet access, and laundry.
What We Expect of Long-Term Volunteers:
- Fluency in Spanish.
- Willingness to put in long days of hard work with a cheerful attitude.
- Recognition that internships are one element of a large and complex project.
- Flexibility in terms of work, schedule, accomodations, etc. You will be asked to help out with tasks that are not explicitly listed as part of your internship.
- .Ability to take initiative and act as a self-starter in terms of shaping role here and learning from the experience.
- Ability to work alongside local workers, and show cultural sensitivity and appreciation of the norms here.
- Understand the challenges of living and working in a remote setting and in a small community. The nearest town, Cochrane, is 40 minutes away by car and interns have no regular access to vehicles.
