Creation of a new National Park

The principle long-term project goal is the creation of a new dramatic national park, which will ensure Chile's highest conservation protection for an area of at least 750,000 acres -an area larger than Chile's Torres del Paine National Park- and help guarantee the survival of the endangered huemul deer. A secondary, but equally important goal, is for the creation of Patagonia National Park to stimulate a shift in the local economy from pastoral agriculture towards a more benign "production" of tourism.

Restructuring the Local Economy

Though Conservacion Patagonica cannot effect a shift in the local economy unilaterally, it is our hope that as the ranching lifestyle and livelihood decreases in the Aysén region, the beauty of the area will assure an increasing economy of tourism to take the place of the animal production industry. Our contribution of CP properties is the most significant way in which we can support this transition. We are also working with local tourist and community leaders on projects such as the development of a long-term, well-designed signage system for the area, the training of local hotels and restaurants in touristic services and the training of local guides.
