While it is not clear that the future Patagonia National Park may be directly affected by the creation of at least two new dams on the Baker River (Chile’s largest and most pristine river), Conservacion Patagonica has actively joined the movement against the destruction of this region through this for-profit energy project that pretends to produce and ship energy via high-tension wires 1,400 miles north to Santiago. This proposal by the Spanish energy company, Endesa, joined by a Chilean enterprise, is being fought by many national groups in Chile as well as the international community. The Province of Aysen is known as the “Reserve of Life” due to it’s wildness, extraordinary beauty and it’s communities who see the health of their future through conservation of their lands rather than through the exploitation of them. The proposal to destroy this future through this mega project is the number one threat to the region.
